Age of Exploration Biography Task Cards

Age of Exploration Biography Task Cards

Task cards are a quick, fun and engaging way to teach your middle school students about a lot of European explorers/conquerors in a way that reaches learners with many different learning styles.

Check out my Age of Exploration Biography Task Cards!

These cards are perfect for exposing your students to many of the most famous figures from the Age of Exploration while they work in cooperative groups to match, sort and group the explorers/conquerors based on a variety of criteria that either they create or you provide. You’ll be amazed at the spirited debates and compromises your students will make while doing this one simple activity.

Some possible categories your students might create (or that you might direct them to create):

  • Country of Origin (who did each explorer/conqueror explore or conquer for?)
  • By Time Period (who did their exploring when?)
  • By Motivation (why did they do what they were doing? riches? fame? religion?)
  • The Effects of Their Exploration (which set up trading? farms? conquest for precious metals?)
  • Importance (you could ask your students to debate and discuss the relative importance or lasting effect of each)

The explorers/conquerors included are:

  • Prince Henry the Navigator
  • Leif Erickson
  • Christopher Columbus
  • Robert-Rene, Sieur de La Salle
  • Father Marquette
  • Hernan Cortes
  • Hernando de Soto
