How To Help Your Students Identify Critical Content (Marzano DQ6)

Find out why identifying critical content is so important for your students, and how you can help them learn how to do it!

Keep reading to find out why Dr. Marzano says teaching students how to identify critical content is so important, and how you can do it in your classroom!

Have you ever tried a reading strategy with your students that calls for them to highlight what is important in a piece of text? If your students are anything like mine, they either go “highlighter crazy” and highlight everything on the page, or just write “it’s all important” in highlighter at the top.

If everything is the most important thing, nothing is. The same problem arises when students just read. Many simply cannot pick out what is important from what isn’t. Dr. Marzano picked up on this shortcoming, and placed it as number six on his teaching placemat(CLICK HERE for a post about how and why to use the Marzano teaching placemat).

The key with this element (as it is with most things) is to not assume your students can identify what is important – you must intentionally train them in this skill, then provide many small-scale opportunities for them to practice it. Most of my resources incorporate identifying critical content in some way, but the two that do so most overtly are my differentiated readings (CLICK HERE to check them out) and my Reading Response Journals (CLICK HERE).

  • “My students loved this resource! They understand it and stayed engaged. Highly recommend.” – Busy Bee Marie 5-stars
